Workshop on scenarios, load cases and reference sites

What is an energy scenario? How do we make market simulations for hydropower? What kind of data do we need? These were questions, which the participants of the HydroFlex workshop on scenarios, load cases and reference sites discussed on June 14th in Trondheim. The workshop was organized by WP 2 leader Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics (IAEW) at RWTH Aachen University.

The definition of scenarios and reference cases done in WP2 is central for the activities in the other work packages. Therefore, a mutual understanding of the term scenario is essential. For this purpose, Marius Siemonsmeier, Philipp Baumanns and Niklas van Bracht from IAEW (RWTH) presented the Institute’s power system simulation and a meta-analysis of existing European energy scenarios. On that basis, parameters have been identified which highly affect the demand for flexibility of hydropower plants. Three scenarios have to be defined and developed in WP2. In order to ensure the involvement of the whole consortium in the scenario development process, major trends which should be covered by those scenarios have been discussed as well as possible modifications regarding the project’s target. In addition, the participants debated the question of possible reference sites.
